For over forty years, NEED has depended upon donations from corporations, foundations, and the general community for financial support. There are a variety of ways to give to NEED. As always, we understand there are a wide variety of worthy causes in our region, and we thank those that have chosen to support NEED.

General Information:

  • NEED is designated as an Education Improvement Organization under the EITC Program.
  • NEED is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. You can visit the State of Pennsylvania's website to confirm our status.
  • NEED is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to accept donations under the Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credits.
  • NEED donations are tax-deductible
  • NEED will not share or sell your personal information with any outside source. We do however add all of our donors' names into our mailing database to receive our quarterly newsletter as well as an invitation to the NEED Benefit Dinner. If you do not wish to receive these items, please inform us when you make your donation.

General Contributions:

NEED accepts donations in the form of personal checks, money orders, Visa, and Mastercard. To mail in a contribution:

United Way and Combined Federal Campaign Giving:

  • Giving to NEED through the United Way is a convenient method of distributing your gift over a period of time. Our contributor's choice number with the United Way of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties, as well as the Mon Valley United Way is #250.
  • Our Combined Federal Campaign number for federal employees is #33076.

Adopt-A-Student Program:

Each year, NEED extends financial assistance to approximately 500 students, but turns away over 300 others due to lack of scholarships funds available for distribution.

The NEED Adopt-A-Student program was conceived in 1992 and is designed to provide scholarship dollars to students that would otherwise be turned away.

The program also provides a tangible link between the student and the donor, encouraging mentor relationships as the student journeys through higher education. A recent study showed that students that are mentored during their studies are 46% more likely to graduate than their non-mentored peers!

The Process

  • The sponsor makes a commitment of $1,000 per year for four years
  • NEED selects the student using any predefined criteria set forth by the sponsor (school choice, course of study, demographics, etc.) and submits the name to the sponsor.
  • The sponsor may then remain anonymous or may choose to communicate with the student.
  • The sponsor receives a yearly student progress report.

Scholarships/Endowments

  • NEED manages over 75 special scholarships for outside organizations. If you would like to speak with us about establishing a scholarship, please call 412-566-2760.
  • Establishing a named endowed fund in the NEED endowment is the ideal way to ensure that your gift to NEED supports the organization for years to come. If you are interested in endowment giving, please call us at 412-566-2760.
