Caitlynn Eva Weston

UPMC Scholarship

Caitlynn plans to pursue a degree that will allow her to nurture her existing interests in medicine, diversity initiatives and Spanish, i.e., an undergraduate degree majoring in public health (pre-medicine) and minoring in Spanish. She has a 3.3 GPA at The Ellis School and holds many leadership positions. Some of her school activities include: vice-president, Student Diversity Leadership; president, Woodfire Club; captain, swim team; member, Sisterhood; and senior representative, Student Council. Caitlynn is involved in the youth ministry at her church. She also participated in a global service program where she was on a mission to Cuba to assist with the residents of the hurricane devastation

Serenia Nevels

Sheldon and Susan Whitaker Scholarship

Serena attends Pittsburgh Langley High School where she maintains a 3.3 GPA. She is the drum major for the marching band and plays on the tennis team. She participated in the American Friends Service Committee’s Racial Justice Through Human Rights Youth Project with the mission of exploring racial inequality and human rights and disparities in the local city and community. Serena was instrumental in helping to declare Pittsburgh as a Human Rights City by writing letters, calling and meeting with City Council representatives to better the city’s living conditions. The proclamation that Serena spoke about was the need for additional bus funding. Serena’s post-secondary goal is to become a teacher.

Miles Brown

Peter and Cindy Mendes Scholarship

Miles is captain of the bowling team, a member of the basketball and track and field teams and the National Achievers Society, and a drummer in the school band as he maintains a 3.61 GPA at Imani Christian Academy. In college, he will concentrate on an accounting major, following by a graduate degree in economics. Miles participates in community service and mentoring activities and also wants to become a registered USBC bowling coach as this sport has been a passion of his for many years.

Kelvin Parnell, Jr.

John and Marsha Bingler Scholarship

Kelvin attends Canon-McMillan High School. He has a 3.6 GPA, is captain of the track and field team, and is a member of Leadership Conference, the Pep Band and the National Allegheny Cemetery Honors Band. Kelvin credits his father’s wisdom, tenacity, strength and love as the foundation of his motivation, will and commitment toward a college and professional career. Kelvin participates and volunteers for many community events.

Faith Kirkland

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority , Inc., Pittsburgh Alumnae Chapter Scholarship

Faith’s ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD in physical therapy. She ranks number three in her class, has a 4.05 GPA at Trinity Christian High School and is a member of the Student Council, co-captain of the basketball team and flutist for the band. Other awards and honors include National Achievement Scholarship semi-finalist, National Honor Society, Junior National Honor Society and the University of Pittsburgh MC2 Math Competition (her team finished in first place) and the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad, Sounds of Music Category (fourth place). Faith volunteers at a community food bank.

Jade Harris

Candi Castleberry- Singleton Scholarship

 

Jade Harris. Jade has maintained a 4.0 GPA since the ninth grade and ranks number one in her class at Faith Christian School. She intends to study medicine because of the experience she encountered at the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering’s summer camp. She serves as co-captain of the volleyball team. Jade is Plus Teen USA 2011-2012 and she credits the pageant as giving her the opportunity to stepped outside of her comfort zone and the confidence to overcome public speaking. She is also a mentor for several non-profit organizations.

Kenneth C. Vinston

Aaron Mann Scholarship

Kenneth’s academic course load is rigorous and his extracurricular activities (the majority which are music-focused) are similarly demanding. At Pittsburgh Carrick High School, he has a 3.8 GPA, is the drum major for the band (a highly regarded position as the band director selects the individual through an audition process), and also a member of the Jazz Choir, Bagpipe Band, Pittsburgh Percussion, Carrick plays and musicals and treasurer of the African-American Center for Advanced Studies (treasurer). Kenneth will pursue musical training with the goal of performing professionally as well as teaching at the high-school level.
